Two kinds of fridge leaks
A refrigerator with an ice maker or water dispenser is fed by a thin line, often plastic or braided, connected to a cold-water pipe under the sink, in the basement below, or behind the fridge. That line is under pressure all the time. Plastic lines get brittle and crack, connections loosen when the fridge is pulled out to clean, and saddle valves that clamp onto a pipe can leak.
The other source is the defrost system. Frost melts off the cooling coils several times a day and drains into a pan underneath, where it evaporates. If the drain tube clogs or freezes, water backs up and drips inside the fridge or onto the floor in front. That leak is small but steady.
Because the fridge sits on the floor for years, water under it can soak wood, laminate or particleboard subfloor long before anyone sees a puddle.
Finding and stopping it
Check the water first
Is it inside the fresh-food compartment, under the crisper drawers, or on the floor at the front or back? Inside points to the defrost drain; behind points to the supply line.
Close the supply valve
Look under the sink, behind the fridge, or in the basement ceiling below the kitchen for a small valve on a thin line. If you cannot find it, close the main.
Unplug and pull it out
Pull the fridge straight out slowly, protecting the floor. Look at the line, its connections and the wall behind.
Look at the floor
Check for staining, cupping or soft spots where the fridge stood. In a home with a basement, look at the ceiling below the kitchen.
Supply line or defrost drain?
| Supply line leak | Defrost drain problem |
|---|---|
| Water at the back or under the fridge | Water inside the fridge or at the front |
| Continues when the fridge is unplugged | Ice building up on the back wall inside |
| Can be a steady stream if a line splits | A slow drip or small puddle |
| Stops when the supply valve is closed | Unaffected by the supply valve |
| Fix: replace the line or fitting | Fix: clear or thaw the drain tube |
Questions for the repair
- Should the plastic line be replaced with braided stainless steel?
- Is there a saddle valve that should be swapped for a proper shutoff?
- Is the floor under the fridge dry, or does it need to be opened and dried?
- If you rent, has the owner been told in writing?
Common questions
Can I leave the ice maker line off for now?
Yes. Turn off the ice maker in the settings, close the valve, and the fridge will keep cooling normally.
